BAFTA View is a web-based streaming platform, which hosts online content exclusively for members, to review for the BAFTA Awards.

Working with distributors, studios and production companies, BAFTA View allows members the opportunity to watch films or episodes of television and obtain access codes for games. The content is hosted on players, either on a third-party player, or on BAFTA’s own in-house player, Electron. With a stable internet connection, members can access BAFTA View from anywhere in the world via the web app or Amazon Fire TV Stick app.

Launched in 2020 exclusively for BAFTA members, BAFTA View makes every submitted title available for viewing during the Film Awards voting season. This levels the playing field in terms of exposure for each title, regardless of marketing budget.

As BAFTA View provides a content platform for distributors to stream their content hosted on different players, each player may have their own unique security features, such as DRMs and watermarking. However, BAFTA View allows members to access this content all in one place, using their existing bafta.org login credentials.

In October 2022, we launched the Amazon Fire TV Stick app to enable members to watch content more easily on larger screens. As with the BAFTA View web app, the it hosts content on our in-house player, Electron, and various third-party players facilitated by entrants or distributors. The app is currently the most convenient way to access BAFTA View and watch films on a TV or projector.

BAFTA View is in continued development. We conduct wide-ranging user surveys annually, which are vital to the ongoing development of BAFTA View. We also welcome ideas for future updates via voting@bafta.org.

Search Title

There is a text search where you can type text to search for entry titles. There are a couple of items to consider:

The search will only display entries that are in the current filter. If you have a filter set and are unable to find the entry which you are searching then clear the filter

The search will only uses the entry title

The search will only display entries where there is an exact match with one of the words in the entry title

The View Menu

Located on the top right of all view pages this menu is used to change how the entries appear on the view page. There are three types of view:

Grid – Displays a poster image of the entry. Hovering over the image will display additional entry data and options. Clicking on the entry image will open the entry page.

Summary – Displays a poster image of the entry alongside a short entry summary and entry data. Clicking on the entry image will open the entry page.

List – Entries are displayed in a vertical list which includes some entry data and options. Clicking on the View button will open the entry page.

The Filter Menu

The options in the filter menu are designed to assist you reduce the selection of entries on the View Pages in order to find relevant content and create smaller groups of entries for review. The options described in this section may not be relevant to all awards. The options can be used alone or together. Everything that you select before clicking Apply will be used to define the selection of entries.

Note when a filter is applied the number of entries displayed on the right above the entries will change. For example you might see 10 of 20 entries. In this case the filter is showing 10 out of a possible total 20 entries.

The Buttons

At the bottom of the filter are buttons which affect the current filter selection

Apply Filters – this will close the menu and search the entries in the award that match the selection you have specified

Clear All – this will reset all the selected filters so that you can view all entries or make a new filter selection

Filter by Tag

Entries may be tagged with one or more terms, such as Female Director. Selecting a tag will display all the entries that have the tag allocated to them.

You can select multiple tags in your filter. If you decide to choose multiple tags then entries that match one or more of the selected tags will be displayed.

Filter by Category

Entries are always placed into categories where they are judged and filtering by the category in the filter may be enabled for an award. The categories you can select will be the categories in which the entries available to view have been listed and the categories that for which you have voting rights.

Selecting a category will display all the entries that have the tag allocated to them.

You can select categories in your filter. If you decide to choose multiple categories then entries that match one or more of the selected categories will be displayed.

You can select both Tags and Categories to filter for a selection of entries. If both Tags and Categories are selected in a filter then entries that contain a minimum of both one tag and and category selected.

Filtering by Watched

There is a button on each entry screen, below the synopsis, as well as each entry on the Grid and List View called Watched. Clicking on the button will activate it and the button will turn Gold. This allows you to tag the entries that you have watched so that you can include or exclude these entries from your searching. It is assumed that all entries are unwatched until you click the button. Entries are not automatically updated by clicking the play button.

In the Filter meu you will see the following options:

All – this is the default setting and all entries are included in the filter

Watched Only – the filter will only include entries that you have flagged as watched by clicking the watch button

Unwatched Only – the filter will only include entries that are flagged as unwatched

Filtering by Notes

In BAFTA View you can make personal notes on entries to assist with your evaluation of entries. Read the Notes guide [LINK] to find out how to create, save and delete notes.

The filter section offers the option to filter the entry selection by the status of any notes you may have saved on entries.

All – this is the default setting and all entries regardless of the notes status

Saved Notes – the filter will only include entries where you have save notes

Empty notes – the filter will only include entries where there are no notes

The Sort Menu

Sorting is different to filtering in that sorting only affects the order of the current selection of entries displayed on the sort page. Choosing an option in this menu will not increase or decrease the number of entries on the page but will place them in a logical order.

BAFTA View plays videos from all sources in a pop-up window. Therefore, if you have an active pop-up blocker in your browser you will need to disable it. It is important to remember that each browser you use will have its OWN pop-up blocker. So, if you alternate your use between more than one browser, you will need to disable pop-up blockers in EACH of them and not assume that having disabled them for one browser that it will apply across your entire device.

Conversely, some browsers may be set to block pop-ups by default. In these cases, you should adjust each of these to ensure they ENABLE pop-ups.

Also note that some browsers block or allow pop-ups by domain. If this is the case with your preferred browser, you should adjust it so that it will play content from our domain view.bafta.org.

See below guides on how to disable pop-up blockers / enable pop-ups for the most commonly used browsers:

Chrome: For Mac, PC, Android and iOS

If you are using HDMI cable connection from a laptop to your smart TV and the picture is transmitted across to your TV but without audio, it is likely because the output device for your audio is stuck – by default – to your laptop. Some laptops will switch this automatically to your TV the moment you connect the HDMI cable. Others will expect you to do it manually. In the latter case, once you have connected your laptop to TV via HDMI, do the following:

Go to the Speaker icon on your laptop screen, where you usually control your volume. (Typically along the top on a Mac, along the bottom on a PC).

FOR MAC:

Click on it and under the volume slider you should see a list under ‘Output Device’. If this is set to ‘Internal Speakers’ this will continue to play the audio via your laptop.

There also should be an option to underneath this which represents your TV. Click on that and the audio should now begin playing on your TV.

FOR PC:

Right click on it and a list of options should appear.

Depending on the version or Windows you are running, click on the option ‘Open Sound Settings’ or similar.

A window will open for your Sound Settings. This will include an option to ‘Choose your output device’

From the dropdown here, it will currently be set to your laptop’s internal speakers. Switch it to your TV and the sound will begin playing on your TV

Videos which are hosted by BAFTA have incorporated a process called ‘Adaptive Streaming’ which adjusts the quality of the playback according to the strength of a user’s internet connection, to allow unbroken viewing and prevent buffering. This is denoted by the default ‘Auto’ setting in the quality selector. At all times, this Auto setting will play the film at the best available quality to ensure unbroken viewing.

Videos hosted by external platforms do not have this functionality but should still offer you the option to switch manually between quality levels if you prefer to do so in order to maintain uninterrupted viewing.

Likewise, you can also manually override the ‘Auto’ setting in BAFTA hosted videos to higher or lower at any time if you prefer. For example, if you know you have connectivity or internet speed problems you might choose to reduce the quality to a lower level if this is preferable to you.

If BAFTA View appears slow, or fails to load, this might because you need to clear the cookies or cache on your browser. The reason clearing cookies/cache can help, is due to browsers often storing versions of websites in the cache to avoid having to download everything (like images, backgrounds, logos, etc.) every time a website is visited. Problems can happen if the website has been updated recently and it conflicts with the cached version. Browser caches are temporary but some may store things for longer than others.

If you don’t clear your cache from time to time, you might not see changes on a website with your computer loading older, cached data. Old, unused extensions can also clutter up your browser, using your RAM and memory.

Viewing Groups

One of the recurring themes that emerged in the BAFTA 2020 Review is just how challenging it can be to watch as many films as we would all like in a condensed period, which can lead to a relatively small number of very high profile films getting all the attention.

To help ‘level the playing field’ and make sure all films are viewed by enough members to ensure they have been properly considered, this year we are trailing a system of recommended viewing ahead of Round One voting closing on 26 January 2021. As approved following the BAFTA 2020 Review, each voting member has been assigned a group of around 15 films which we recommend you prioritise watching, before casting your votes.

There is no obligation or encouragement to vote for the films in your group, and as always, we urge you to watch as many films as you can from all groups. However, we ask that if your viewing time is limited, that you do focus on watching the 15 films assigned to your group. Films have been randomly distributed across all groups, and members have similarly been assigned a group at random.

This process will mean that all entered films are watched by over four hundred members at a minimum, and we hope that members discover films that they might not otherwise have watched.
