Casting to Chromecast

If you have a Chromecast device connected to your smart TV, you can cast to it from any one of:

i) Windows PC/Laptop

ii) Android mobile device (tablet or smartphone)

iii) Macbook

There are some exceptions to this – specifically titles hosted by external distributors which block all casting to Chromecast. See: https://help.view.bafta.org/help-articles/not-available-to-cast-restrictions/

Casting from a Windows PC or Laptop

You can cast from a Windows PC or laptop to a Chromecast device, provided you use the Chrome browser to access the BAFTA View content on your laptop. (With the exception of titles hosted by some external distributors and Vimeo-hosted titles, see below). You should access BAFTA View using the Chrome browser and select your chosen title. Then:

  1. Switch your TV AUX or EXT (or equivalent) setting to the corresponding HDMI port where your Chromecast is connected.
  2. Once the Chromecast homepage appears on your TV screen, click ‘WATCH’ on the video on your laptop.
  3. The video will begin playing on your laptop. Look for a white screen icon in the bottom right corner of the control panel. Click on the screen icon.

4. A box will pop up on your laptop screen listing the available devices you can cast to. Click on the one that relates to your Chromecast device.

5. The white screen icon will now turn blue and the video will begin casting to your TV.

Vimeo-hosted Videos

Vimeo does not currently support direct casting via the Chrome browser, however there is a work-around for this on PC – which is to cast your entire screen. Follow steps 1-2 above, and then:

3. Go to the 3 vertical dots icon in the top right corner and from the dropdown, click on Cast.

   4. From the dropdown that opens, click on Sources.

5. Click Cast Desktop.

  • Click on the listed device you want to cast the desktop to.
  • Your desktop will now be mirrored to your TV.
  • You can now search through BAFTA View for your video, and click WATCH. The video will play and appear on your TV as it does initially on your Desktop – as a pop-up. Use the Full-Screen option to expand it fully.

Casting from an Android phone or tablet

We have found casting from a phone or tablet running Android 9.0 or upwards software via the Chrome browser to a Chromecast device to offer the best and most consistent mobile experience (with the exception of titles hosted by some external distributors and Vimeo-hosted titles, see below). You should access BAFTA View using the Chrome browser and select your chosen title. Then:

  1. Switch your TV AUX or EXT (or equivalent) setting to the corresponding HDMI port where your Chromecast is connected.
  2. Once the Chromecast homepage appears on your TV screen, click ‘WATCH’ on the title on your Android mobile device.
  3. The video will begin playing on your device. Look for a white screen icon in the bottom right corner of the control panel. Click on the screen icon.

4. A box will pop up on your device screen listing the available devices you can cast to. Click on the one that relates to your Chromecast device.

5. The white screen icon will now turn blue and the video will begin casting to your TV.

Casting Vimeo-hosted videos from an Android phone or tablet

There is an exception for videos hosted on Vimeo when casting from Android phones/tablets via Chrome browser to Chromecast. Vimeo does not currently support casting from the Chrome browser. If you are viewing a Vimeo film and an Android phone/tablet and Chromecast are your only available devices to beam it to your TV, you can download the third party app Web Video Caster to your phone/tablet.

Web Video Caster acts as a browser, which scans the video before allowing you to play and cast it to your Chromecast device. Once installed, follow these steps:

  1. Switch your TV AUX or EXT (or equivalent) setting to the corresponding HDMI port where your Chromecast  is connected.
  2. Once the Chromecast homepage displays on your TV, open the Web Video Caster app on your phone/tablet.
  3. In the ‘Browse’ address bar, type voting.bafta.org .
  4. Once logged in to voting.bafta.org, go into BAFTA View to select the title you require and tap WATCH.
  5. A black Play button will appear on a yellow circle at the top of your screen. Tap this.
  6. A list of the available file versions of the title will appear. Tap the one that is listed in your preferred resolution (ie. 1920×1080). If it appears, also select the box ‘Route video through phone’.
  7. The video will begin casting to your TV via Chromecast. If it does not, return to the Play button on yellow circle and select one of the other file versions.
Casting from a Macbook

If you have Chromecast connected to your Smart TV, you can cast from your Macbook to the Smart TV via the Chrome browser – provided you have enabled Mirroring in the Chrome browser.

  1. To enable Mirroring in your Chrome browser, begin by opening up Chrome.
  2. In the address bar, type in chrome://flags and hit Enter.
  3. press both your CTRL + F keys on your keyboard to bring up the Findtool.
  4. Type in Mirroring, and hit Enter.
  5. Your Chrome browsers Mirroring services should appear. From the drop-down select Enabled.
  • This change will take effect once you close and re-launch Chrome. To do this, hit the Relaunch button in the bottom right corner.
  • Now you have enabled mirroring on your Macbook, Switch your TV AUX or EXT (or equivalent) setting to the corresponding HDMI port where your Chromecast is connected.
  •  Once the Chromecast homepage appears on your TV screen, click ‘WATCH’ on the title on your laptop.
  • The video will begin playing on your laptop. Look for a white screen icon in the bottom right corner of the control panel. Click on the screen icon.

A box will pop up on your laptop screen listing the available devices you can cast to. Click on the one that relates to your Chromecast device.

The white screen icon will now turn blue and the video will begin casting to your TV.
